How to Start Doing Your Morning Pages

17.04.23 | Katy | No Comments

Morning Pages is a writing exercise that was popularized by Julia Cameron in her book, “The Artist’s Way.” The exercise involves writing three pages of stream-of-consciousness writing every morning, without worrying about grammar, spelling, or punctuation. It’s a way to clear your mind and start the day with a clean slate. In this blog post, we’ll discuss how to start writing your Morning Pages.

The Benefits of Morning Pages

Before we dive into how to start writing your Morning Pages, let’s first discuss why you should consider doing this exercise. Some of the benefits of writing Morning Pages include:

  • Improved mental clarity: By writing down your thoughts and worries, you can clear your mind and start the day with a fresh perspective.
  • Increased creativity: Morning Pages can help unlock your creativity and generate new ideas.
  • Reduced stress: Writing down your worries and anxieties can help reduce stress and anxiety.
  • Improved productivity: Starting the day with a clear mind can help you be more productive and focused throughout the day.

How to Start Writing Your Morning Pages

Now that you know the benefits of Morning Pages, let’s discuss how to start writing them. Here are some tips to help you get started:

  1. Set aside time every morning: Choose a time that works best for you and make it a habit to write every morning.
  2. Find a quiet space: Choose a quiet and comfortable space where you can write without distractions.
  3. Start with a prompt: If you’re having trouble getting started, try using a prompt to kickstart your writing. Some examples of prompts include: “Today I feel…”, “I’m grateful for…”, or “What’s on my mind…”.
  4. Write without stopping: Don’t worry about grammar, spelling, or punctuation. Just write whatever comes to mind and don’t stop until you’ve filled three pages.
  5. Don’t judge your writing: Remember, Morning Pages are not meant to be perfect. Don’t judge your writing or worry about what others may think. It’s for your eyes only.

Use a Journal You Love

In order to keep myself engaged with my morning pages I use a journal I absolutely love. This can be a love for its beauty of it or for the functionality of the journal. Finding the right fit for your pages may take a few tries, so don’t get bummed out if the first iteration isn’t the one for you!

I personally use a digital journal for my morning pages. I have no excuse for a pen being out of ink, or not having my journal with me.

I really like the idea of this linkable journal, which includes tons of customization options. Click here to grab yours!

This handmade journal would be a treat to use. Using a beautiful journal like this will romanticize the process of writing your morning pages, and creates an experience you won’t want to miss.

Shop for this journal here.

Lastly, I want to recommend this simple journal. Nobody will know that your thoughts and feelings are poured into this notebook. You could even work to decorate the cover yourself with markers, paint or stickers to show off your creativity and make something special for you.

Shop this journal here.

Starting your Morning Pages can be a powerful tool to improve your mental clarity, creativity, and productivity. By following these tips, you can start incorporating this exercise into your daily routine and experience the benefits for yourself. Remember, Morning Pages are a personal exercise, so don’t worry about being perfect. Just write and see where your mind takes you.

4. My home office/craft room refresh. Pulled the carpet, laid peel & stick tiles, color drenched the walls & ceiling, and upgraded my craft supply storage solution. I’m OB 👏 SESSED 👏! There’s still a little more to do like swap out the ceiling fan, overall clean up and organize/purge my crap, and to finish hanging my cross stitching, art, and curtains, but it’s been so fun to work and craft in here already I can’t get over it.
